Beautifully hand-painted lacquer box depicting the Battle of Kulikovo, one of the defining battles of Medieval Russia. The battle was fought by the Tartar-Mongols and the Russians September 8, 1380 on the fields of the Kulikovo Podye. Depicted in the center of the battle is the Grand Prince of Vladimir, Dmitri Ivanovich of Moscow ("Dmitry of the Don"). Kulikovo is near the juncture of the Don and Nepryadva rivers.
